Opened 3 August 1871, it was built and furnished by John Talbot Clifton and cost £1,300 for 'the relief of the poor labouring under disease or accidents'.

It was funded by voluntary contributions and by the Contributory Scheme until the National Health Service was formed in 1948. The charity connected directly with the hospital, known as 'The Friends', has continued its support under both methods of management.
